2017: Year of the Subscription Boxes

New Year, New Me! Happy 2017!

Seeing as it’s been almost a year since I’ve posted anything, I took some time to try and come up with some new, exciting things to discuss. Right now, subscription boxes are all the rage! So I figured, why not try a couple out and see what all the fuss is about.

In 2016, I tried a few and was left a little meh. Here’s a quick review of the ones I’ve tried:

Blue Apron

I tried Blue Apron for a few months to try new foods. I was tired of the same old thing. It was exciting at first, but then got to be hard work. I didn’t like how you could only choose certain foods each week and with a picky husband, the choices became a little too intense for his palate. The price was also way off base for what you would spend on those items in the store. The directions we good, but somewhat difficult for a novice cook like myself. I found it time consuming, you need to make sure you have enough time to prep each meal. Think about an hour and a half each meal. Cuts of meat were hit or miss, we had some tender and some really tough. So tough we had to throw it out. Vegetables were fresh, but not always ripe though.

Overall: It was nice to try something new that I wouldn’t have otherwise tried on my own, but for the price and the choices I wouldn’t go back.

Fandom of the Month Club

My daughter did this one for a year and was pleased for the price that was paid, but did have some complaints. While the price for the yearly subscription was relatively low compared to other fandom boxes, it showed in the quality of the items. Some items broke after one wearing and some she wouldn’t even wear because she knew it wouldn’t last. This doesn’t go for every piece she received, but probably about 50 percent. This club is also a surprise club, meaning you didn’t know what you would be getting, and that didn’t bode well for her. She ended up giving away half of the boxes she received because she wasn’t a fan of that month’s theme. Some themes included Pokemon, Sherlock, Lord of the Rings, Avengers, Harry Potter, Wizard of Oz, Alice in Wonderland, etc. There was a brief hiccup where 2 months she didn’t receive her box as well, but it was cleared up by the helpful staff.

Overall: If you have a young girl/boy who likes all fandoms and doesn’t mind what they would get, go for it. It’s fun, exciting and will make their month every time the mail delivers the tiny striped box. But if you’re an adult looking for actual jewelry that you can wear outside a theme party or comic convention, look into other boxes.

So, after the experience of two subscription boxes under our belt, onto the next!

Steampunk in the Catskills

This weekend there will be a “Steampunk in the Catskills” event on June 5-7 at the Blackthorne Resort. I will be a vendor there on Saturday selling my handmade steampunk style items of jewelry and magnets. (I will have a verity of other styles as well.) It sounds like it will be an exciting event with a High Tea and a Crocquet game on the lawn. Also a haunted house and hot air balloon rides. There will be live entertainment by Frenchy and the Punk, Prof Mark Donnelly, Jeff Mach and Nicole Oliva. There will also be bird watching hikes and horse drawn carriages on the roadway of the resort.

Steampunk is a style of Victorian 1800s meets the mechanical age, where gentlemen wore top hats, mustaches and driving goggles, and women wore corsets, carried parasols and rallied as suffragettes.

Mechanical gears mixed with technology combined with science fiction and fantasy, sometimes on a dark side of the imagination is where you will find Steampunk.

I’m very excited to announce that a new business adventure is in the works between ArtsDaughter Jewelry and Insticator, a startup company that allows people to engage and create predictions, trivia, and even has contests to win rewards.

We all consume media (TV, sports, entertainment) and are always discussing and making predictions. We set out to build insticator because we wanted a place to keep track and see who was the best.

Supernatural Convention in New Jersey

A few weeks ago (Sept 4-7) I was a vendor at the Supernatural Convention in Whippany New Jersey. This television show on the CW has been a favorite with my family since 2005 when it premiered on Sept 13th. My daughter, Holly and I sold my handmade pins and magnets from all Sci-Fi genre including Supernatural, Dr. Who, Firefly as well as Sherlock, steampunk, Harry Potter and (yes) My Little Ponies. It was a prosperous weekend as well as fun and entertaining. Met lots of interesting fans of the show and got to go to a few of the panels hosted by the stars of the show. We had a fabulous time the karaoke night and enjoyed the Cabaret show. It was a rewarding experience and we hope to do it again.

Getting ready for #Supernatural #NJcon!

sn_banner4

For those of you who did not see my Facebook & Twitter posts last month, I’ve signed on to be a vendor at the Supernatural Convention in Whippany, NJ this year (Sept 5-7) hosted by Creation Entertainment! I’ve been busting my butt the past few weeks making some fun Supernatural themed pins and magnets just for this event. I have also had the extremely hard task of re-watching episodes to get ideas. (I know, such a tough job!) I have about one month left to get everything finished, but am pretty much ahead of schedule. On top of those pins, I will also be bringing a selection of my other pins as seen in my ETSY SHOP. So there will be lots to choose from. I’m very excited about this event because not only am I huge fan of the show, but this will be my first really big event. If all goes well, I may have to pack my schedule next year! (Steampunk World’s Fair, here I come! LOL 😉 )

So Supernatural Fans!! What kind of Supernatural Fan-Made pins would you like to see?
